The 20th century was a period of great changes and challengenes in the history of women. At the very beginning, women were completely ignored and discriminated against by laws and institutions. Many American states failed to accord human rights to women. For instance, they were not able to participate in decisions that affect their lives. Women were denied political participation and were not allowed to have an abortion. For a long time women also faced discrimination in employment and suffered from violence within their homes.
Over the past few decades the role of women in American society has changed dramatically. Over the entire history women have always fought for the idea of equal rights and becoming independent from their husbands. They strived for the right to vote and the right to work for equal pay. At the end of the century this has taken the form of gaining reproductive rights, the women's suffrage and of gaining property rights. In the course of the time more and more women have joined the paid workforce and not only of taking care of their families. They have taken on new responsibilities outside their homes.
All in all, it was a long journey and struggle for women to achieve more equality. In this project we are going to take a deeper look at the historic and cultural events that contributed to more emancipation and awareness concerning this issue, as well as at historical figures who paved the way for a woman in the USA to be what she is today.
